Bao Shu, born in 1980, is one of the most talented writers of contemporary China. He graduated from Peking University with a degree in philosophy, then attended graduate school at the University of Leuven in Belgium. Since 2010, Bao Shu has published works over millions of words, including science fiction novels Ruins of Time and Seven States of Galaxy Saga (co-authored), as well as a short story collection The Ancient Song of Earth. His short stories and novellas are seen in literary magazines such as Science Fiction World, Galaxy’s Edge Chinese version and People’s Literature. As a translator, he has translated What Does It All Mean? A Very Short Introduction to Philosophy by Thomas Nagel into Chinese. The Redemption of Time, a paraquel to The Three Body Problem that was originally published as a work of fanfiction in June 2011, had been translated into English, Polish, Russian, German, French, Czech and Japanese. In the past decade, Bao Shu won critical literary awards including the Chinese Science Fiction Galaxy Award, the Chinese Nebula Award and the Lenghu Science Fiction Award. He was coined “the most promising emerging writer of Chinese science fiction.”

Recommended in this issue is Bao Shu’s new work, “Hyperspace Partner,” originally published in Galaxy’s Edge Chinese version No. 7. As information communication technology continues to evolve, people’s sensation of space and time are changing as well. How will this impact the life of a long-distance couple? The story is short, but it speaks volumes for what’s happening in our reality.
